At Annie Lim Family Practice, our services encompass all of the general health care needs that might be required by you or your family, from babies to adults to end-of-life care.
We look forward to assisting you and your family in the management of your ailments, dilemmas and discomforts, whether they be physical or psychological or both. We understand the burden of illness and know that it can be eased by being well informed and by having a caring, considered health management plan. To this end, we seek to provide a continuum of heath care, based on collaboration between you, the patient, and our doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
Our doctors and nursing staff offer the following services:
We can provide minor-to-acute care to patients who have been injured, such as lacerations or sprains.
Please call us about work-related injuries and our receptionists can carry out a triage assessment for you. For more serious injuries, you may need to present to the hospital’s casualty department.
All our doctors provide services relating to women’s health. General women’s health issues include menarche, menstruation problems, contraceptive advice, antenatal care, postnatal care, relationship problems, menopause issues, and urinary problems.
Dr Annie Lim and Dr Kelly Teagles are trained in the insertion of IUDs (Intra Uterine Devices). Most of our doctors are able to insert Implanon NXT.
Dr Susan Vickers is a GP with a special interest in lactation medicine and breastfeeding. As a qualified lactation consultant, she provides medical support for breastfeeding mothers and their infants where there are difficulties with feeding, collaborating with other lactation consultants, allied health professionals, midwives and medical specialists where necessary.
Common problems include supply issues, latching difficulties, breast and nipple pain and poor infant weight gains. Dr Vickers’ aim is to manage these in a holistic context, with a strong respect for the individual mother’s needs and wishes.
Dr Laurence Anderson provides a comprehensive skin cancer management service. He has a background in science and has trained with plastic surgeons. Dr Anderson has taught medical students in three countries and written several books, including child-care and pregnancy and one on cosmetic surgery.
Dr Anderson was a full-time artist at one time and he retains his artistic skills in cosmetic medicine. “I still like to do as visually perfect a job as I can when I remove skin cancers,” he said, having applied his art skills to a general practice career spanning 20 years.
In fact, it was not as big a change as it appears, having studied science before taking up a paint brush.
“My first degree was in cell and environmental biology, followed by honours and then a master’s degree in cytogenetics” (a link here to explain the meaning), Dr Anderson said. “After that I needed a break, so I went to painting.”
He brought his family to Canberra from Sydney in 2008 to attend school.
“I feel very fortunate to have found such a relaxed lifestyle and congenial practice at Dr Lim’s here in Canberra.”
Mental health issues are prevalent in the community, with various patterns of presentation, and they can lead to significant mortality issues. Dr Annie Lim has a special interest in mental health issues and welcomes you to make an appointment with her to discuss your psychological concerns.
Statistics show that men are more reluctant than women to actively seek health care. The reasons for this are many. In general, most men assume that having no visible symptoms means they are disease-free. Of course this is not always the case. Significant health-risk factors, such as high blood pressure levels, may be symptom free but can have devastating consequences, such as heart attack, kidney failure, stroke or sudden death.
At Annie Lim Family Practice our doctors seek to encourage our male patients to adopt a more proactive approach to their health care by presenting regularly for health checks.
Our practice has won recognition for having a very high rate of childhood immunisation. We are very proud of our achievement and encourage all our families to immunise their children. We are also proactive in terms of adult immunisation maintenance and travel immunisation.
We provide corporate medical services covered by WorkCover/WorkSafe ACT and Comcare. This can include all types of work-related injuries and/or rehabilitation. These services include:
The practice takes a preventive approach to health care and we actively screen our patients for cholesterol and BMI (body mass index), and offer lifestyle modification with the help of a dietitian and a psychologist if needed. We embrace the view in all our treatments that prevention is better than cure. This approach is demonstrated in our chronic disease management and care plans and assessments.
Chronic disease can be debilitating for individuals and a burden for their families and the wider community. Our approach to chronic disease management is to use preventive strategies that help individuals to maintain their independence and stay as healthy as possible.
Our doctors encourage patients to take an active role in their own care, with initiatives such as stopping smoking, healthy eating and physical activity programs. We also provide information on chronic disease management and carry out frequent reviews of progress and well being.
Care plans are extremely helpful for people with chronic diseases. The plans are prepared using a collaborative approach involving doctors and patients, practice nurses and allied health professionals. The care plans are documents that summarise the important areas of health concern that have been agreed between the patient and the caring team. They outline a plan of management, the actions needed to be taken by the patient and the team members involved in assisting in the patient’s recovery.
Care plans are bulk billed and renewed on an annual basis. Once a care plan is in place it allows the patient to access Medicare rebate for services provided by the allied health professionals who are involved in the care plan.
As we all know, there are few limits on the breadth and extent of illness and disease. But these are some of the more common areas of health that we see in our family practice.
We take a very broad approach to helping our patients to manage their health and lifestyles. We provide these services as part of our preventive and collaborative approach to your health management. This may include:
Our trained nurses are available in the practice to provide a range of nursing care, including:
